I’m travelling across the country on a sabbatical from work and thought I’d do a few pop-up shows. Previously, I’ve toured shows and made short films on themes related to spirituality & church. More recently I’ve been performing stand-up comedy in the spirit of sincerity. I’m hoping this show will blend the two into a fine aural-paste that you, the audience, will find entertaining, educating, and palatable.

This new show is just in the beginning stages. It’s about community and ritual, with a sprinkling of existential absurdism. It’s also funny. Or at least, I hope it will be funny. I guess you’ll all be the judge of that. Which is good, because this is also me focus testing.

So help me work out this new show by spreading the word or attending yourself:

REVENGE OF THE EARNEST: AN EXPERIMENTAL COMEDY SPECIAL

ABOUT

REVENGE OF THE EARNEST is an experimental comedy special at the intersection of stand up, dance, and documentary.

Filmed in the heart of downtown Hamilton, performer Kevin Makins takes the audience on a journey towards sincerity by exploring big issues of our day including our shifting Canadian identity, the breakdown of language, and why it’s impossible to remember people’s names. Accompanying Makins is dancer Skye Rogers, who gracefully navigates one of Canada’s most iconic streets and invites viewers to witness a changing city at a crucial time.

Weaved together under the skilled eye of director Shawn Lovering, these two performers balletically play with time and space, creating a comedy special that is both pretty and poignant, hopeful and hilarious.

Go All the Way…

We’re happy to give away Revenge of the Earnest for free to anyone who will trade for their attention.

If you want a keepsake of our time together, or wish to support creative work like this, you can order a copy on cassette, which includes a b-side conversation The Spirituality of Sincerity with Canadian artist Shad.

Cassettes are $15 + shipping and include a download code.

Recorded at Church of the Redeemer, one of the quietest spaces in the storm that is downtown Toronto, Shad and Kevin dig deeper into the themes of the special reflecting on courage, language, spiritual practice and making art when married.

These limited edition cassettes are designed by the legendary James Kingsley (jameskingsley.ca) and feel amazing to hold.
